This project is an initiative to build shower cubicles for the 750 teenaged girls at Kimaanya Secondary School in Uganda.
Background
Thanks to the Rotary Club of Berry in Australia, the Kimaanya School now has access to tanked rainwater, however they have no means of showering at school. The current facilities at the school are not sufficient to address the girls’ hygiene and sanitation needs. It is common to see students in long queues as early as 3 a.m. every day, each of the students waiting for their turn to take a shower according to the school principal. Some of the girls stated in a video interview that they are at times forced to shower in the open in order to be on time for their routine school activities which officially start at 7:00 a.m.
Once the clean water began flowing at the school, one of the girls, Abigail, approached the school coordinator for the opportunity to present one more request to Rotary for much needed shower cubicles. Thus, Abigail’s Project was born.
